12th Edition Of the nICE classification becomes effective
Saudi Arabia has recently become the first Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to adopt the 12th Edition of the NICE Classification. Effective from November 2, 2023, the Saudi Arabia Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), has replaced the 11th Edition of the NICE Classification with its 12th Edition. Earlier, the 11th Edition was in force since 2021.
The adoption of the 12th Edition of the NICE Classification has also brought about a significant change in the trademark registration process. SAIP will no longer allow the trademark applicants to claim class headings for their trademark applications. Instead, the applicants can now choose specific goods or services using the exact terminology as used in the 12th Edition or designate the entire class by picking all the items included in the given class.
